{"id":16,"date":"2012-08-22T15:51:37","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T15:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sudbury.ma.us\/health\/2012\/08\/22\/eee-virus-risk-raised-to-moderate-in-sudbury\/"},"modified":"2017-11-07T10:28:20","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T15:28:20","slug":"eee-virus-risk-raised-to-moderate-in-sudbury","status":"public-archive","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sudbury.ma.us\/health\/2012\/08\/22\/eee-virus-risk-raised-to-moderate-in-sudbury\/","title":{"rendered":"EEE virus risk raised to moderate in Sudbury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Based upon EEE virus&nbsp;mosquito testing in the Metrowest area and a positive EEE mosquito trap sample of a bird biting mosquito&nbsp;collected&nbsp;on July 18, 2012 in Sudbury the EEE&nbsp;risk level has been raised to moderate.&nbsp;Residents should be aware that&nbsp;should a&nbsp;change from moderate to high occur in Sudbury that curtailment of outdoor evening activities at sunset will be recommended.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>EEE is a rare but serious illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. While EEE can infect people of all ages, people under 15 years of age or over 50 years of age are at greatest risk for serious illness.<\/p>\n<p>By taking a few, common-sense precautions, people can help to protect themselves and their loved ones:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid Mosquito Bites<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-left: 27pt;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 4px 0px 4px 0px;\"><strong>Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours<\/strong>&#8211; The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-left: 27pt;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 4px 0px 4px 0px;\"><strong>Clothing Can Help <\/strong>reduce mosquito bites. Although it may be difficult to do when it\u2019s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-left: 27pt;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 4px 0px 4px 0px;\"><strong>Apply Insect Repellent <\/strong>when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with <strong>DEET<\/strong> (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), <strong>permethrin, picaridin<\/strong> (KBR 3023), <strong>IR3535<\/strong> or <strong>oil of lemon eucalyptus<\/strong> [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mosquito-Proof Your Home<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-left: 27pt;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 4px 0px 4px 0px;\"><strong>Drain Standing Water<\/strong>&#8211; Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-left: 27pt;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 4px 0px 4px 0px;\"><strong>Install or Repair Screens<\/strong>&#8211; Some mosquitoes like to come indoors.
