Under the supervision of the Head of Children\u2019s Services, the Assistant Head of Children\u2019s Services will play a vital role in the development and implementation of outstanding Library programs and services for youth. This individual will perform a wide variety of professional children\u2019s librarian work including, but not limited to, performing story times; creating promotional materials; running special programs such as book clubs, library-wide programs, etc.; providing reader\u2019s advisory services; responding to reference questions; and curating library collections. In addition, this position works in close collaboration with the Head of Teen Services to provide a smooth and impactful continuation of programming for youth. Preferred candidates will be creative, innovative, fun, be able to work independently, and possess excellent problem-solving skills. A positive attitude, flexibility, and desire to learn are essential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff, and present ideas and<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;questions in a clear manner.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.<br \/>\n\u2022 Self-starter with excellent organizational skills.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ability to resolve conflicts and make decisions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Working knowledge of current and emerging technologies, including Google<br \/>\n&nbsp; Workplace, Canva, marketing software, Microsoft suite.<br \/>\n\u2022 Comfortable using social media to promote the library.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Duties:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Assistant Head of Children\u2019s Services will provide a wide range of Library services for youth, families, caregivers, and educators. Daily responsibilities include reference and readers&#8217; advisory services, the development and implementation of programs, and the coordination of departmental volunteers. The Assistant Head of Children\u2019s Services will actively participate in the advancement of services through a wide variety of marketing efforts, including newsletters, email blasts, print and electronic handouts, and social media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Responsibilities:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Work closely with supervisors and staff to design a creative and educational<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;summer reading program.<br \/>\n\u2022 Participate in community outreach, including school visits.<br \/>\n\u2022 Provide support and training for staff and volunteers.<br \/>\n\u2022 Work to improve the efficiency and organization of the children\u2019s department.<br \/>\n\u2022 Assist with the identification of materials that will support the needs and<br \/>\n&nbsp; interests of the community.<br \/>\n\u2022 Assist with staff scheduling, policies &amp; procedures, and program statistics.<br \/>\n\u2022 Participate in Short- &amp; Long-Term Planning.<br \/>\n\u2022 Handles daily operations of the Children\u2019s Room and acts as supervisor when the<br \/>\n&nbsp; Head of Children\u2019s Services is not available.<br \/>\n\u2022 Available to work one evening per week and one Saturday a month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education &amp; Experience:<\/strong><br \/>\nMaster\u2019s Degree in Library Science or enrollment in a M.L.S. graduate program from an accredited institution required. One to two years working with children in a library setting preferred. Applicants adept at providing reader\u2019s advisory services to school age children and experience with children\u2019s programming will be given greater consideration.
