Sudbury Day 2005 Shines Through
The threat of hurricane-force winds and rain again failed to dampen the spirit of the fourth annual Sudbury Day on Saturday, September 17, 2005. Perhaps it was because this year’s Sudbury Day focused on the countries of the Mediterranean Sea, an area famous for its sunny and mild weather!
Although the decision was made to hold the event indoors at the Peter Noyes Elementary School, the predicted rain never arrived. The many activities that could only take place outdoors went on as planned, including the much anticipated RE/MAX First Realty hot air balloon rides offered to those who made donations to the American Red Cross’s Hurricane Katrina Fund, the Sudbury Youth Commission’s NASCAR-style, remote-control auto racing, and the opportunity to climb aboard Allied Waste’s brand new garbage truck.
Main Stage emcee Jim Parmentier got people on their feet and dancing during the five hours of Mediterranean-influenced entertainment, including belly dancing, Italian folk dancing, and Croatian choral music, to name a few. The cuisine at the International Food Pavilion exposed diners to some of the dishes one might find along the Mediterranean Sea (Angelato’s, Tomasso Trattoria and Zesto Bakery Kafe), as well as other foods from around the world (Acapulco’s, Le’s, Rasoi, Sweet Pepper). The Marketplace also featured a number of booths offering Mediterranean wares, in addition to the many community groups who were able to share their information in a meaningful way with residents. And finally, the very popular Children’s Pavilion put kids in a Mediterranean mindset featuring activities related to countries in the area, including Egypt, Morocco, Italy, and Algeria.
Sudbury Day is grateful to World Sponsors Allied Waste Industries, Emerson Hospital, Marlborough Savings Bank, Cara Donley Pediatric Dentistry, RE/MAX First Realty, Inc. – Sam Webb, Shaw’s Supermarket, Sudbury Farms, Warren Graphics, Whole Foods Market, and William Raveis Real Estate, who contributed so much of their time and resources to making the day a success and without whom the event would be much harder to produce.
The Sudbury Day Committee looks forward to Sudbury Day 2006, on Saturday, September 16, when we celebrate our fifth year. Look for more details starting in April, but if you have any suggestions or would like to join the committee, please email sudburyday@town.sudbury.ma.us
