East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project

The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project is planning to use a truck mounted aerosol sprayer to apply Sumithrin in Bedford, North Reading, Sudbury and Wakefield during the week beginning Monday, July 15, 2019. Spraying will be done between dusk and 11:30 PM.

On Monday, July 15, 2019, spraying is scheduled for areas of Bedford that are located in the vicinity of Concord Rd., Davis Rd., Carlisle Rd., North Rd., Wildwood Dr and Pine Hill Rd. If spraying is postponed, it will be rescheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2019.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2019, spraying is scheduled for areas of North Reading that are located in the vicinity of Turner Dr., Patriot Way, Abbott Rd., Greene St., Williams Rd. and streets off of Chestnut St. If spraying is postponed, it will be rescheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2019.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, spraying is scheduled for areas of Sudbury that are located in the vicinity of Landham Rd., Woodside Rd., Raymond Rd., Nobscot Rd., Goodman’s Hill Rd. and Old Lancaster Rd. If spraying is postponed, it will be rescheduled for Thursday, July 18, 2019.

On Thursday, July 18, 2019, spraying is scheduled for neighborhoods of Wakefield that are located in the vicinity of Lakeview Ave., Hillcrest Rd., Cordis St., Wave Ave., Spruce St., Andrews Rd., Wharton Pk. and Penfield Cir. If spraying is postponed, it will be rescheduled for Monday, July 22, 2019.

The Project uses a spray formulation that contains the pesticide product, Anvil, to control mosquitoes. Anvil contains the pesticide, sumithrin, which is a pyrethroid that is classified as slightly toxic by the EPA. Mosquito control applications of sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or their pets due to the low toxicity of sumithrin and the small amount used to control mosquitoes. As with any pesticide, people should minimize their exposure. If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a few minutes while the spray dissipates. Residents are also advised to close windows. Beekeepers do not need to take any special precautions since spraying begins after dusk.
