FAQ
Why is the Town shifting from free public charging to a fee-based structure?
Purchasing, installing, operating, and maintaining public EV chargers incurs costs, including the electricity used for charging and regular maintenance costs with the vendor. Charging a fee for the use of the public chargers positions the Town to equitably offset these costs to provide public EV charging infrastructure to the entire community. The current charging rate of $0.42/kWh was established based on a review of rates in neighboring communities across the greater Boston and MetroWest region and is intended to reflect a balance between fair, market-based pricing and a need to cover the basic costs of the program. The rate will be reviewed periodically to maintain that balance. At 2025 Town Meeting, an Electric Vehicle Charging Revolving Fund was established to ensure that any revenue from the public EV charging stations would be secured specifically for continued investment in the viability and reliability of the program.
What is an Idle Fee?
An idle fee is assessed when a vehicle remains connected to a charger after it is fully charged. The purpose of the fee is to encourage vehicle owners who are occupying the EV charging space to free up the space for other users in a reasonable amount of time. Town of Sudbury charging stations offer a 30 minute grace period once a vehicle has been fully charged. After charging is completed and the additional 30 minutes have passed, users will be charged an additional $3.00/hour for each hour that the space is occupied. The fee is charged in full-hour increments, beginning at the end of the grace period.
