To prevent heat-related illnesses, authorities are urging residents to avoid strenuous activity, avoid too much sun, stay indoors as much as possible, drink plenty of fluids and wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing. Residents should not leave children or pets alone in a closed, parked car. Residents should check regularly on infants, young children, people age 65 and older, people who have a mental illness and people who are physically ill.
