L-S student charged with intentionally running over fellow student

Police say a Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School student intentionally ran over a fellow student on Tuesday with his truck, but a school administrator downplayed the allegations today in a message to parents.
A 16-year-old student was arrested Tuesday at 11:10 a.m. and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a pickup truck, after he ran over a fellow student’s legs, police spokesman Lt. Scott Nix said.
But today, in an email message to parents, Superintendent/Principal John Ritchie said the incident was overblown because it appeared recently on a televised news report.
“It sounded as though in her mind (the television reporter) the story involved one student intentionally driving at a high speed in an effort to run over another student in front of a large crowd of witnesses,” said Ritchie. “This is not what happened. We know all the individuals and have every confidence they will respond to our unhappiness about their behavior appropriately.”
On Tuesday, the 16-year-old who was arrested got into an argument with another student, Ritchie said in his statement. Nix said he did not know what led to the incident or the age of the victim.
The 16-year-old then hit the other student with his pickup truck. The victim’s foot struck the front of the truck and then the driver’s side front tire ran over the boy’s thighs, Nix said.
After the incident, the 16-year-old, who was not named due to his age, got into an altercation with several of the victim’s friends. Those involved could also face charges, Nix said.
The victim was taken to Emerson Hospital in Concord to be treated for leg injuries, the lieutenant said.
In his email, Ritchie said the injuries were minor, and it is not even clear if the victim was hit, or fell.
“There was some sort of disagreement among some students that resulted in one of them banging or hitting a vehicle driven by another,” said Ritchie. “The ‘hitter’ then slipped or fell, and miraculously was not seriously injured at all when his leg was caught under the wheel of the car.”
The 16-year-old who was arrested was arraigned Tuesday in Framingham Juvenile Court and was released to the custody of his parents, Nix said.
The condition of the victim was not known.
