Town Manager Maureen Valente announced that she has appointed Lt. Richard “Rick  Glavin to be the new Chief of the Sudbury Police Department, effective January 1, 2009. Lt. Glavin has been serving as Interim Police Chief since the retirement of former Chief Peter Fadgen in March 2009. He was selected from a pool of four internal candidates who applied for the top job in the department.

“Chief Glavin’s many years of experience with the Sudbury Police Department, and the leadership he provided while serving as Interim Chief, make him an ideal candidate for the job,” said Valente. “He is smart, focused, and extremely qualified to lead the Sudbury Police Department into the future. The Board of Selectmen and I are particularly impressed with his dedication to building strong leadership for the future, and we look forward to working with him as he continues the tradition of outstanding public service from the Sudbury Police Department. With Rick as the head of the Department, assisted by Lt. Scott Nix and supported by the other fine men and women of the Sudbury Police Department, we are confident the Department will continue the standards of excellence and professionalism we have been fortunate to experience here in Sudbury”.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunities this community has given me in the past 18 years and look forward to serving in this new capacity to the best of my abilities” said Chief Glavin.  “I am fortunate to have had a great mentor in former Chief Peter Fadgen and to be surrounded by such dedicated men and women. I would like to thank the Town Manager and the Board of Selectmen for the support they have given to both me and the entire Department”.

Glavin has risen through the ranks with distinction. He began his law enforcement career with the Billerica Police Department, moving to the Sudbury Police Department in 1992, where he has served as patrol officer, detective and sergeant. In 2004, he was named Executive Lieutenant (second in command of Department), overseeing the patrol and dispatch operations until he was appointed Interim Chief earlier this year. Glavin holds a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement from Western New England College in Springfield Massachusetts. In 1994 he was awarded a commendation and the Medal of Honor by the Department for extricating a severely burned motorist from a vehicle engulfed in flames. In 1994 he received a commendation for his part in the arrest of a group of professional criminals that were committing a rash of night time burglaries in North Sudbury.

The swearing in ceremony for Chief Glavin will be held in January, at a date to be announced.
