Board of Selectmen Supports STARS

Last week, the Board of Selectmen signed a proclamation in support of the STARS program in Sudbury.
The STARS program, Students Thinking and Acting Responsibly in Sudbury, is a partnership between the Sudbury Public Schools and the Sudbury Police Department created to help our students deal with important challenges they face today including drugs, both illegal and prescribed, cyber-bullying, digital safety, and using smart phones. Classroom instruction is designed to motivate students to behave in ways that promote well-being and to develop skills and individual responsibility for one’s health. The unit emphasizes critical thinking, self-advocacy and good decision-making.
The partnership has resulted in the assignment of a police resource officer to the schools and encourages the development of a positive relationship between Sudbury students and our public safety personnel.
Chuck Woodard, who worked on the proclamation with resident Geoff Phillips, said “This program supports all students in learning how to make responsible, safe, and healthful choices now and in the future as they deal with the challenges we faced as kids and some tougher challenges we did not have to face. I applaud the school system and the Police Department for this initiative, and with Mr. Phillips, I encourage Sudbury parents to discuss it and support it as the Board has.”
