As used in the context of Property Taxes an Exemption is a release from paying all or a portion of a tax assessed. Property Exemptions are conferred by the State Legislature under Mass. General Laws, Chapter 59, Section 5. The categories of individuals for whom exemptions are conferred are Disabled Veterans with a wartime service connected disability of not less than 10%, applicants who are Blind, certain persons over the age of 70 with limited income and assets, and those individuals who are aged, infirm and suffering financially.

As used in the context of Property Taxes a Deferral is a delay in paying property taxes. A tax deferral is available to persons over the age of 65 who have an annual income of $40,000 or less.
