First and foremost, notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles, as soon as you move http://www.mass.gov/rmv/ and effectuate your change of address. Excise in Massachusetts is not prorated based on moving from one town to another. You pay one city or town a year, according to where the RMV has the vehicle listed on January 1st of the tax year, or in the case of a newly registered vehicle, it would be on the date of registration. Unlike insurance, excise rates do not vary throughout the state. If you are billed from the former community, call the Assessors Office in that community immediately, and ask whether the bill should be paid as issued, or if there is other action needed. There are instances when the bill should be paid as issued even though you have moved. The subsequent community will not bill you for the same time frame. Providing an address change has been submitted properly to the Registry, future bills (for the next calendar year) should be issued from the new community. |
