For the week beginning July 2nd, 2018, the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project is planning to use truck mounted aerosol sprayers to apply Sumithrin in Burlington and Reading. All spraying is done between dusk and 11:30.

On Monday, July 2nd, spraying will be done in areas of Burlington that are located in the vicinity of Wilmington Rd., Upland Rd., Fox Hill Rd., Mill St., Locust St., Peach Orchard Rd., Keans Rd., Bacon St. and the Wynnmere area. If we have to postpone due to weather, we will spray the area on Thursday, July 5th.

Also on Monday, July 2nd, spraying will be done in areas of Reading that are located in the vicinity of Van Norden Rd., Causeway Rd., Glen Rd., Longwood Rd., Bancroft Rd., Green St., Belmont St. and Grove St. If we have to postpone due to weather, we will spray the area on Thursday, July 5th.

On Tuesday, July 3rd, spraying is scheduled for neighborhoods of Burlington that are located between Cambridge St. and the Middlesex Turnpike. If we have to postpone due to weather, we will spray the area on Thursday, July 5th.

The Project uses a spray formulation containing the pesticide, sumithrin, to control mosquitoes.   Sumithrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that that the EPA classifies as slightly toxic.  Mosquito control applications of sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or their pets due to the low toxicity of the pesticide and the small amount that is used to control mosquitoes.  As with any pesticide, people should minimize their exposure. If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a couple of minutes, while the spray dissipates.  Residents are advised to close any windows that face the street.  Beekeepers do not need to take any special precautions because the spraying begins after dusk.
