East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project

The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project is planning to use a truck mounted aerosol sprayer to apply Sumithrin in Reading and Weston during the week beginning Monday, July 29, 2019. Spraying will be done between dusk and 11:30 PM.

On Monday, July 29, 2019, spraying will be done in areas of Reading that are located in the vicinity of Oak St., Prospect St., Randall Rd. and Margaret Rd. Spraying will also be done in the vicinity of Libby Ave., Putnam Rd., Eastway and Range Rd.

On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, spraying is scheduled for neighborhoods of Weston that are located north of the Boston Post Rd. including streets in the vicinity of Warren Ave., Meriam St., Conant Rd., Church St., Kings Grant Rd., Montvale Rd. and Lexington St.

If postponed on either night, spraying will occur on Thursday, August 1, 2019.

The Project uses a spray formulation that contains the pesticide product, Anvil, to control mosquitoes. Anvil contains the pesticide, sumithrin, which is a pyrethroid that is classified as slightly toxic by the EPA. Mosquito control applications of sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or their pets due to the low toxicity of sumithrin and the small amount used to control mosquitoes. As with any pesticide, people should minimize their exposure.  If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a few minutes while the spray dissipates. Residents are also advised to close windows. Beekeepers do not need to take any special precautions since spraying begins after dusk.
