Chief John M. Whalen reports that the Sudbury Fire Department rescued a man who fell through the ice on Willis Lake this afternoon.

At 3:36 p.m., Sudbury Public Safety Dispatch received a call from a man who had fallen through the ice while cross-country skiing on Willis Lake, but was able to hold onto bushes to keep himself above the water.

Sudbury Fire and Police personnel responded.  Upon arrival, three firefighters donned ice rescue suits and went onto the pond with an ice rescue sled and were able to rescue the man and bring him to safety.

The man was subsequently transported to Emerson Hospital for evaluation.

“This is a great example of our firefighters putting their extensive training to use to help someone in need,” Chief Whalen said.

The Wayland Fire Department provided a mutual aid ambulance during the incident.
