In Sudbury Town Hall Kirsten D. Roopenian, a member of the Board of Selectmen read a proclamation declaring February 2, 2002 HOPEsudbury day. HOPEsudbury is a Humanitarian Outreach Project designed to bring out the best of Sudbury while helping those in need. Its conception is a result of the events of September 11, 2001.

The concept of HOPEsudbury is community. The event and program was put together by members of the Board of Selectmen, Town Manager Maureen Valente, Sudbury Public Schools Superintendent Bill Hurley, various town employees and residents. Members of the Chamber of Commerce including Nick Palermo helped with the publicity and marketing of HOPEsudbury. Community building among all groups and individuals is a key theme of HOPEsudbury.

Before the proclamation Bill Hurley, the Superintendent of Schools in Sudbury spoke about the project. He touched on the theme of community by saying” We are all part of a greater community, and that’s the community of the Human Race”. Mr. Hurley suggested that children can best learn the value of volunteerism by following their parent’s example at events like this. Representative Susan Pope also spoke about HOPEsudbury.

Town Hall was divided into stations where residents participated in different activities. Some wrote letters to be delivered to NYC firefighters. Others E-mailed a serviceman or woman in Afghanistan. They made flags of HOPE which hung from clotheslines, on display for everyone at the event. People were also able to donate blankets for Afghan refugees. Refreshments and snacks were provided for those in attendance.

The next project for HOPEsudbury is the creation of comfort baskets. Stationary, stamps, disposable cameras, games and food will be included in these baskets. The baskets will be delivered to the Family Support Center at Hanscom Air Force Base. 30 families with family members deployed overseas will receive these comfort baskets. A larger event is also being planned. HOPEsudbury members are investigating the production of a local telethon sometime in the fall, which will feature local talent as well as some well known acts. Proceeds of the telethon will be given to recipients chosen by the HOPEsudbury executive committee.
