An American Hometown Tradition: Memorial Day Parade – May 28, 2018

Sudbury’s Memorial Day Parade, Grinnell Park Ceremonies, and Hosmer House Program are held on the last Monday in May. This year, the date is 28 May 2018. Come, view the parade or march with us as we visit all the War Memorials in Sudbury. Honor an outstanding Sudbury citizen serving as Parade Marshal, and hear the Sudbury Companies of Militia and Minute, Company F, 12th Georgia Infantry, and the American Legion fire musket and rifle salutes.

The Parade and ceremonies honor veterans of all wars that involved Sudbury residents starting with King Philip’s War of 1676 through today’s conflicts. During these Memorial Day events, we especially remember men and women who lost their lives in service of their country.

Parade Marshal
Accompanied by her family, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Ingrid Centurion, U.S. Army (Retired), a distinguished Army veteran and Sudbury resident, will serve as 2018 Parade Marshal.

Lieutenant Colonel Ingrid Centurion

LTC Centurion graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Aeronautical Technology from the School of Engineering and was commissioned into US ARMY Aviation in 1991. She holds a Master’s of Science in Aviation Operations & Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

LTC Centurion’s leadership experience includes: Platoon Leader assignments while stationed with 2nd Infantry Division in Korea; Company Commander, 12th Aviation Battalion, Fort Belvoir, VA; Company Commander, United States Army Aviation Center, Helicopter School Battalion, Fort Rucker, Alabama; Battalion Executive Officer, 1-13th Aviation Regiment, United States Army Aviation Center, Brigade Aviation Standardization Officer, 504th Military Intelligence Brigade and Battalion Executive Officer, 15th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas; Joint Operations Mission Planner for the Southwest Border, Fort Bliss, Texas; Deputy J35 Operations Officer, Joint Task Force North, Fort Bliss Texas.

Her awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Master Aviator Badge, and Airborne Parachutist Badge. She is a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Aviation Officers’ Basic and Advanced Courses, the US Army’s Military Intelligence Office Basic and Advanced Course, the US Army Maintenance Test Pilot Course, the U.S. Army’s Combined Arms Service Staff School, the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College, and the US Army Joint Course Norfolk, VA.

Ingrid Centurion is the CEO of Centurion Technologies Consulting LLC. Additionally, she serves as the Executive Vice President First Region Association of the United States Army (AUSA). She is also the Senior Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign War, VFW Post 929, and is a member of the Sudbury American Legion. She is the marketing-chair to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Chief Information Officer (CIO) Symposium. She hosts and produces her own cable TV show called Inspiring Careers which will be aired on ACCESS Framingham TV. She is a motivational speaker, inspiring and empowering people of all ages. Her recent challenge is with an MIT start up company as the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Lunar Station Corporation (LSC). As the CMO, she is responsible for the branding, communications and marketing strategy for LSC.

Ingrid Centurion is married to Jose Moreno, and they have two sons, Anthony 19, and Brandon 17, and she takes her care of mother, Eva Centurion who resides with them.

Veterans
All veterans are invited to join in the line of march at Rugged Bear Plaza. Uniforms are not required. Civilian clothes which respect the dignity of the occasion (dark slacks, white dress shirt, and hat that identifies your branch of service or veterans’ organization are appropriate). Transportation will be provided for those who wish to participate but feel they are not capable of marching along.

Parade and Ceremonies

The main part of the Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Rugged Bear Plaza, 410 Boston Post Road, where the Parade Marshal, Boy Scouts, and a delegation from the Native American Cultural Center will join members of the Sudbury Military Family Network and veterans’ organizations, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Sudbury Companies of Militia and Minute, the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companies, and Company F, 12th Georgia Regiment. Musket and rifle salutes will be fired at each stop by the Sudbury Companies of Militia and Minute, Company F, 12th Georgia Infantry, and the American Legion.

The Parade marches east along Route 20 then north on Concord Road, with stops at the Goodnow Library Civil War Monument, the Wadsworth Monument (King Philip’s War), and the World War II, Korean and Vietnam Memorials at Wadsworth Cemetery.

As the parade continues north on Concord Road, Girl Scouts and Brownies join the marchers at Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Memorial Day Program
At about 11:00 a.m., the parade reaches Grinnell Park in the town center for concluding remarks and final tributes at the World War I Monument followed by the Memorial Day Program.

Musical selections are performed by the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companies and Girl Scouts along with musket and rifle salutes. The Sudbury garden clubs will dedicate the Blue Star Marker, and the United Native American Council will perform a ceremony of peace. The Council has performed this ceremony for over 30 years during the Sudbury Memorial Day observance. Parade Marshal, Lieutenant Colonel Centurion, will be recognized, followed by her remarks. Finally the names of Sudbury veterans who have passed since last Memorial Day are read aloud. Taps will be played by Robert Coe and U.S. Navy Captain (Retired) Paul Mawn.

Hosmer House
Memorial Day Activities begin at Heritage Park at noon. The Hosmer House, 299 Old Sudbury Road, will be open May 28th from 10 am to 2 pm. The parlor will have a display recognizing town and school employees and those who worked on various town committees who passed away in 2017. The Hosmer House store will offer for sale cup plates, dolls, ornaments, books, and the popular Sudbury throws that feature Sudbury‘s historical buildings. Refreshments will be served, and entrance is free of charge. The Sudbury Historical Commission welcomes all to visit the Hosmer House.
