Sudbury 25th Anniversary Commemoration of September 11th

The September 11th Memorial Garden Oversight Committee invites the community to attend the Town of Sudbury’s annual commemoration to honor Sudbury residents lost in the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks 25 years ago. A ceremony, which will include a Color Guard, bell tolling, and the laying of flowers at the Memorial Garden’s center stone, will take place on Friday, September 11th, 8:30 a.m., at the September 11th Memorial Garden in Heritage Park.

Honoring Geoffrey W. Cloud, Peter Goodrich, Cora Hidalgo

This September, we as a community mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.  This tragic day impacted many communities across the state, including right here in Sudbury, which experienced the loss of 3 members of our Sudbury community and countless others from other towns with connections to the community. This is the first in a three-part series presented by the Sudbury September 11 Memorial Garden Committee in advance of the 25th anniversary of September 11. All are invited to join the town commemoration on Friday, September 11th at 8:30 a.m. at the Memorial Garden in Heritage Park.

Remembering Geoffrey W. Cloud: Wit, Ambition, and a Sudbury Heart

To those who grew up with him in Sudbury, Geoffrey Cloud was the local kid with a sharp quickness, a great sense of humor, and a deep appreciation for the community that raised him. Even as his career eventually drew him to the bustling trading floors of Manhattan, his roots remained firmly planted here.

The son of Peter and Bette Cloud, Geoffrey inherited a playful spirit. His late mother, originally from England, fondly recalls Geoffrey bringing childhood friends home just to hear her speak. Years later—after graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and earning his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania—he spent six months interning in the British House of Parliament. During his time there, he mastered the accent well enough to call his parents pretending to be a British salesman offering them a deal on Westminster Abbey. Yet despite his time abroad, Geoffrey was deeply proud to be an American, deeply valuing the freedom, openness, and straight-shooting nature of home.

As an adult, Geoffrey blended his small-town roots with a love for big-city energy, becoming a partner specializing in security regulations at Cantor Fitzgerald. He commuted to his office on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center from Stamford, Connecticut, where he lived with his wife, Mio, and their two young children, Geoffrey and Jaclyn. He was a dedicated husband and father, an avid sportsman, and a passionate reggae fan who brought warmth and enthusiasm to everything he did.

On September 11, 2001, Geoffrey was at his desk in the World Trade Center when the attacks occurred. He was 36 years old.

In addition to his wife and children in Stamford, Geoffrey was survived by his parents, Peter and Bette of Sudbury, his brother Michael, and his sister Janet. Today, his legacy lives on not only in the professional heights he reached, but in the laughter, stories, and affection he left behind in the hearts of his family and hometown.

Honoring Peter Goodrich: A Life of Passion, Brilliance, and Athletic Grace

When Peter Morgan Goodrich was born on October 1, 1967, it was the very day the Boston Red Sox clinched the pennant—a fitting start for a life defined by quiet determination, energy, a drive to excel and a love for the Red Sox.

Raised in Williamstown, MA, Peter grew up with the unwavering support of his parents, who worked tirelessly to help him navigate early struggles with dyslexia, believing deeply in his potential long before anyone else saw it. He graduated cum laude from Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA in 1985, and Bates College in Lewiston, ME in 1989 with high honors in Math and minors in Physics and Computer Science. At Bates, Peter proved to be as formidably gifted in the classroom as he was on the track capturing six All-American honors in track and field, leaving an indelible mark on the college’s athletic legacy.

It was also at Bates where Peter met the love of his life, Rachel Carr. The couple married in Guilford, CT, in October 1992 and eventually settled in Sudbury. Professionally, Peter brought his sharp mathematical mind and compassionate heart to the tech world, advancing to become the Director of Product Development at MKS after several dedicated years with Software Emancipation Technology.

Tragically, Peter’s life was cut short on September 11, 2001, onboard United Airlines Flight 175, at the age of 33. Beyond his remarkable accomplishments, Peter is remembered by his family, friends, and neighbors for his generous spirit, kind heart and love of life. Though his time in Sudbury was far too brief, Peter’s legacy of warmth, excellence, and dedication remains an enduring part of our community.

Honoring Cora Hidalgo Holland: A Legacy of Warmth, Family, and Unconditional Love

For nearly 25 years, Cora and Stephen shared a vibrant life together. Cora was a passionate fan of sports—even successfully lobbying her husband to trade an overseas vacation for a trip to baseball spring training—but her heart was always centered on her role as a mother and grandmother, and her work with new mothers and their children.

Her son, Nate, remembered her presence as an irreplaceable gift, recalling how as a child she would tuck him into bed and run her warm hands through his hair until he drifted off to sleep. “I can still see her propped against the door frame, hands folded upon her elbows, her eyes intent with compassion and love,” he shared in her obituary. “I will never forget that.”

On September 11, 2001, Cora was aboard American Airlines Flight 11, traveling to care for her mother, when the plane was hijacked. She was 52 years old.

Cora’s spirit lives on in the family she cherished above all else. She was survived by her husband, Stephen; her daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Stephen of Arlington, Massachusetts; her daughter Jessica of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and her son Nathaniel and his wife Samanatha of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; and her three beloved grandchildren, Abby, Amelia, and Cora Elizabeth.

While her loss was felt deeply throughout Sudbury and beyond, her legacy of softness, strength, and love remains a comforting touch for all who knew her.
