Algae blooms at Willis Lake

A visual inspection of the water at Willis Lake revealed the presence of algae, assumed to be Blue-Green algae, or cyanobacteria. Prolonged warm temperatures may be contributing to the blooms. The Department of Public Health has been notified and an advisory posted at the lake.
People and pets should avoid contact with the water at Willis Lake until further notice. Ingesting small amounts of toxin (microcystin), produced by cyanobacteria, can cause gastrointestinal distress. Symptoms of microcystin poisoning are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Elevated levels of the toxin may cause serious neurological effects. Eye, ear, and skin irritations can also occur. Contact your physician if you experience symptoms.
Residents are reminded that Willis Lake is not a permitted bathing beach. Swimming is not allowed and can be dangerous.
