The Lincoln-Sudbury Safety Review Committee, a formal subcommittee of the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee, began its work on 3/21/07. On April 25, the Safety Review Committee will hold a meeting devoted to public input and we encourage participation. The Committee is composed of residents of Lincoln and Sudbury, including students, along with L-S faculty and staff. It is comprised of the following individuals:

Dennis Picker, Chair; Ron Nix, Vice-Chair; Sheila Calkins, Sarah Cannon Holden, Scott Carpenter, Hal Chapel, Mark Collins, Eric Harris, Bill Keller, Tucker Krone, John Ollquist, Barbara Pedulla, Alexandra Sliwkowski, Gary Taylor, and Karen Thomsen. Alternates are: Clara Daly, Tom DeNormandie, Tim Garvin, and Bill Ray.

In setting up this committee, the School Committee gave it the following charge:

“To review, report and make recommendations on all operational, physical and educational aspects of Lincoln-Sudbury as they relate to the safety of students, faculty and staff.”

The Committee interprets this to mean that it will evaluate what L-S does or needs to do to insure the social, emotional, and physical well-being of all the members of the school community. It will place special emphasis on how the L-S community responds to reports of interpersonal aggression on school grounds and related violations of school policy. The Committee will pay attention to both physical and psychological violence and their precursors.

The Committee intends to review existing policies, procedures and practices at Lincoln-Sudbury as well as at various other schools. The Committee will seek professional and public input relevant to its work. We will search for “best practices” as they relate to our broad view of “school safety.”

As a result of this review, the Committee will produce a public report that will contain findings and recommendations for actions that it believes will contribute to improving the safety in the broadest sense of students, faculty and staff at Lincoln-Sudbury.

The Committee is committed to conducting its work in a thorough and expeditious manner. Our intention is to issue a preliminary report for public comment by the end of this school year. After a public comment period, the Committee will publish a final report.

All meetings are open to the public and will be held every Wednesday, starting at 7:15PM, usually in Conference Room B of the high school. Please consult our web site at www.lsrhs.net/community/safety
