10/12/22 – Sudbury Fire Department Extinguishes Three-Alarm Fire

Chief John M. Whalen reports that the Sudbury Fire Department battled a three-alarm structure fire at the Cavicchio Greenhouses, and is working with a regional Hazmat team to monitor air conditions around the scene of the fire as a precaution.

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Sudbury Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a smoke condition in a storage building on the property of Cavicchio Greenhouses, 110 Codjer Lane.

Chief Whalen and a full box alarm assignment responded, with Chief Whalen arriving first and discovering an approximately 60 by 100 foot storage building fully engulfed in fire.

A second and third alarm was struck, bringing about 70 firefighters from around the region to the scene as mutual aid.

The storage building contained equipment and some fertilizers, which prompted firefighters to request a response from the District 3 Hazmat Team. The Hazmat Team is monitoring air conditions around the fire as a precaution due to the presence of the fertilizers. Also, out of an abundance of caution, residents near the fire are asked to keep their windows and doors closed until further notice.

There were no reported injuries. The fire was contained the storage building, which is just one of numerous buildings on the property.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the District 14 Fire Investigation Team and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.

“I want to assure residents in the area that we are monitoring air conditions as a precaution, and will alert residents to take additional steps if conditions become a concern,” said Chief Whalen. “I also would like to thank all of our mutual aid partners, whose assistance was, and always is, invaluable to us.”
