HEAD OF CHILDREN’S SERVICES
Description:
The Goodnow Library, located in Sudbury, MA is seeking an enthusiastic professional to ensure outstanding Library programs and services for children and families. The goals of the successful candidate will share those of the Goodnow Library: to introduce children to the love of reading and literature and to help them become capable, critical users of information and technology. The Head of Children’s Services is responsible for managing and supervising the work of the Children’s Department, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for children ages 0-11 and their caregivers, maintaining a current and comprehensive collection, and providing activities and events that appeal to children and their families. This position will be part of an innovative and collaborative leadership team that works to integrate the library into the community at all levels.

- Ability to plan, manage, and evaluate programs and services and to assess their effectiveness based on community needs.
- A genuine caring and respect for children.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff, and present ideas and questions in a clear manner.
- Self-starter with excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to resolve conflicts and make decisions.
- A broad knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature.
- Ability and desire to serve as a strong advocate for children within the library and the community.
- Working knowledge of current and emerging technologies, including Google Workplace, Canva, marketing software, Microsoft Office suite.
- Comfort using social media to promote the Library.
Education & Experience:
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution required. Three to Five years of professional and supervisory experience in Children’s Services in a public library preferred.
General Duties:
The Head of Children’s Services will provide a wide range of Library services for children, families, caregivers, and educators. Daily responsibilities include reference and readers’ advisory services, the development and implementation of programs, managing and scheduling departmental staff, and short and long-range planning for the department. Additional responsibilities include: designing a creative and educational summer reading program, establishing policies & procedures, and managing program statistics. Availability to work one Saturday a month and occasional evenings.
Full Salary Range: $58,357-$76,750 (35 hours/week); starting salary based on qualifications.
