Sumner Tunnel

Built in the 1930’s, the Sumner Tunnel (Route 1A South) is the first traffic tunnel in Massachusetts, and takes vehicles from Logan Airport to Boston/I-93. After nearly a century of service, the tunnel will undergo necessary infrastructure repairs starting this summer.

The Sumner Tunnel will be closed from July 5, 2023 through August 31, 2023. Residents are encouraged to visit the Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project information section of the MassDOT website to learn about alternate travel options and more.
