Word is getting back to staff and members of the Board of Selectmen that a decision has been reached that the Sudbury Transfer Station (TS) will be closed at the end of the current Fiscal Year (June 30).  This information is NOT correct.  Here is the correct and most recent information.

  1. Any changes in the operation of the Sudbury TS requires a vote of the Board of Selectmen for Sudbury and the Selectmen have NOT voted any changes for the TS beyond it s current schedule at this time.
  2. The Board of Selectmen voted as a goal for FY11 for staff to work with the Town of Wayland to study the concept of one shared transfer station between the two Towns.
  3. A discussion of potential changes to the operation of the Sudbury TS is tentatively scheduled for 7:30 pm on the Selectmen’s agenda for March 29, 2011 [1].  At that time, the Selectmen will hear about the status of information developed to date, and they will give staff feedback on next directions to go in.  Residents can attend this meeting of the Board or tune in via cable TV to hear the discussion.
  4. Last year, the Selectmen from both Towns asked staff to determine if there was opportunity for reduced costs and/or enhanced services from a consolidation of the two transfer stations.  Since then we have taken two steps, with Selectmen’s approval:  First, since September 2010, sticker holders from both Towns have been allowed to use each other’s TS on weekdays.  And second, a trial was conducted in December 2010 to test if Wayland’s TS could accommodate all Saturday users from both Towns on one day, and it became clear that could not be done without unacceptably long waits by users.
  5. Based on this information, staff members of both Towns have continued to examine various options for reducing the costs of running the Transfer Station (TS) through further consolidation with the Town of Wayland.  We have looked at different options, and made estimates of the costs and potential savings from different arrangements.  All information is incomplete at this time, but we are working to have as much information developed as possible for the March 29th Selectmen’s meeting.
  6. Staff has not made any recommendations to the Board at this time to close or leave open Sudbury’s TS, nor will we.  We will simply present the Board with information we have been developing on the costs and benefits of various alternatives, as the Board asked us to do.

[1] Please check the Selectmen’s agenda when it is posted to the Town Website on March 25th to confirm this time.
