CREW LEADER

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

Definition
Under the direction of the Foreperson, performs supervisory and construction, maintenance, and repair work on an assigned public works project; all other related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

  • Work under general supervision of the Working Foreperson.
  • Has immediate responsibility for work performance of an assigned crew of laborers and/or equipment operators engaged in routine construction or maintenance tasks.
  • Exercise some independent judgment as to work methods and procedures although projects are for the most part conducted according to established routine.
  • Supervise a team of one to four public works employees.
  • Make intermittent contacts with the general public.
  • Frequent physical effort required to perform duties under varied weather conditions.

Examples of Work

  • Instruct, assign, and oversee staff of one to four equipment operators and laborers.  Train subordinates with regard to safe, efficient use and care of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Repair roads, streets, fences, signs, sow grass, plant trees, cut grass, rake leaves, prepare cemetery lots, etc.  Build and maintain storm drains, manholes, catch basins, and contracts; performs varied tasks involving upkeep and repair of highways, sidewalks, bridges, and waterways; lay pipe, install sewers and hydrants, supervise and assist in maintenance of town recreation and park and cemetery areas.
  • Drive or operate vehicles and equipment engaged in DPW Department construction, maintenance, snow removal, etc., projects and activities.
  • Service and follow prescribed preventive maintenance on equipment or vehicles being operated, such as checking oil, water and battery levels, tire pressure, etc., or other assigned vehicle preventive maintenance, report problems to Foreperson for corrective action.
  • Deal effectively with subordinates and the public.
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with the Foreperson to ensure correct manpower utilization, scheduling, surveys and plans, and proper equipment.
  • Process daily work orders received from the Foreperson; follow-up on resulting assignments for compliance with instructions.
  • Make routine decisions at the job site, such as who is responsible for operating specific equipment, inform Foreperson of these decisions.
  • On-call 24 hours a day for snow removal. 
  • May serve as Acting Foreperson if Foreperson is absent from work.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or requested.

Experience

  • High school diploma or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Three to five years of related experience in Public Works.

Knowledge, Ability, Skill

  • Ability to interact cooperatively and positively with a diverse group of employees, managers, and citizens.
  • Ability to communicate instructions clearly and concisely.  Ability to be both organized and flexible in juggling multiple projects.
  • Complete knowledge of methods, procedures, techniques, tools, materials, machines and equipment required to perform duties safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of the physical characteristics of the Town and its road/system/cemetery record-keeping/turf management.
  • Must meet physical requirements necessary to perform duties including successful completion of periodic physical examinations.
  • A Massachusetts Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and a Massachusetts Hydraulic License are required.
